Latest on cloud storage transition

Please take action now to make sure you do not unexpectedly lose data in Nightingale.

We will begin charging for project storage on Monday, January 13th.

If your project balance isn't enough to cover the storage that you are using, all data will be deleted after a 30-day grace period.

Below is a detailed timeline for the transition:

  • Now:
    • You can preview the volume size that you would need to keep all your current data.
    • Delete data if you do not want to be charged for your storage in January.
  • Coming soon:
    • You will be able to choose a project volume size that suits your needs.
  • Mon 13 Jan 2025:
    • Storage limits will take effect for the volume size you select. If you take no action, the default project volume size is your current usage rounded up to the nearest gigabyte.
    • Each of your projects will be charged the prorated monthly amount for their storage volumes.
    • If you have an insufficient project balance, you will begin receiving email warnings.
    • When you reduce your volume size, the change will take effect on the first of the following month. You will also need to delete files to avoid disk space errors.
  • Going forward:
    • There will be a 30 day grace period if your project balance goes negative. After that, your project data will be deleted if you do nothing.
    • This means on Wed 13 Feb 2025, 30 days after storage limits take effect, you will lose all your data if you take no action.

Transitioning to the 5 GB size limit for home volumes

If you are currently using more than 5 GB, you need to take action to avoid losing all your data.

Initially, Nightingale launched with free and unlimited storage and so you may have more data in your personal $HOME than is allowed with the new storage limits. Your current storage usage is displayed on your main landing page when you login.

If you are currently using less than the limit, you do not need to do anything.

You will see a warning if you are using more than the limit.

Before the transition: Delete data until you are using less than the limit in your home directory (excluding the projects and datasets subdirectories).

On transition day: You will receive disk space errors if you try to access files in your home volume. You will need to delete files until you have less than the limit.

30 days after transition: If you still have more than the limit of data in your home volume, the entire volume will be deleted. We regret that we cannot continue to provide free unlimited storage. Please take prompt action to avoid data loss.

Transitioning to paid project volumes

The app shows you a preview only of what you would have to pay to keep all the data that is currently in each of your project volumes.

Unlike user home volumes, project volumes are shared and can be as large as you are willing to pay for. These will be billed monthly at a price of $0.05 per gigabyte.

Before the transition: Delete any data that you aren't willing to pay for.

Coming soon: Manage your volume size by choosing an appropriate size for your needs, as long as you have deposited sufficient funds in your project.

On transition day: You will receive disk space errors if you try to access files in your project volume if your current storage size exceeds your selected volume size. You will need to delete files or pay for a larger volume.

30 days after transition: If your storage exceeds your volume size, the entire volume will be deleted. We regret that we cannot continue to provide free unlimited storage. Please take prompt action to avoid data loss.
